But there are also important differences – in The Secret, Judith is an unmarried virgin, whereas in Saving Grace, Johanna is a widow whose marriage to the MMC has been arranged. Both FMCs are outcasts who have to earn the respect and trust of the highlanders. Both FMCs are feminists, they’re brave, and they’re independent. In both books, the FMC has a troubled past (CW: domestic abuse).
Both novels describe the relationship between a plucky young Englishwoman thrust into circumstances that are out of her control, and a big, tough Laird beneath whose grizzly exterior lurks the comforting love of a favorite teddy bear (that’s my take, and I'm sticking by it).
I just finished Saving Grace by Julie Garwood and I thought its plot was pretty similar to that of The Secret.
